In 2016, WRC received a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation to create and equip libraries in 9 primary and one high school in greater Cape Town.
It was an extremely uplifting occasion to attend the opening of the new library at Levana Primary School in the poverty stricken township of Lavender Hill, Cape Town. The library has been named after René Roman, a 13 year old Levana pupil who was a murdered near the school last year. René was a keen reader who aspired to be a teacher one day and her loss shocked the school community.
The opening of the library was preceded by a play written and performed by the learners themselves. Professor Jonathon Jansen gave the opening address, telling the learners that he too lived as a child in Lavender Hill and attributed his success to reading at an early age. We are so fortunate to have played a part in creating the learning environement for children in an area desperately needing help, and the hope that books can give.
Paulette Colman who was a Charter member of our Club in 1992 is now based in Cornwall in the UK. Paulette and Theoniel had a lot to reminisce about: they ran in the first Signal Hill Noon Gun Half Marathon as part of the Waterfront Rotary Team. The second photo is of Captain Sue Truter with some of the original Members of the Club: Martin Colman, Theoniel Potgieter, Paulette Colman (not related to Martin) and David Bradley.

A few phone calls later, Maryna returned to Goedverwacht with a boot-full of books.
