AMS Helicopter on Ou Kaapse Weg, airlifting an injured cyclist.
This year, our main beneficiary will be AMS - and for those who do not know - it stands for Air Mercy Service.
In a very small nutshell, they're the amazing people who send air support and trained paramedics to rescue unfortunate hikers who got injured in inaccessible places, they send mercy missions to connect organ donors to recipients, they'll send a plane to collect a super-small human in distress, respond to road accidents and they need all the support they can get, because when you need them, you'll want them to be there!
Along the way, we'll also collect tinned (or other non-perishable) food and household necessities to support destitute familie in Melkbos.

HOW IT WORKS: the RULES, the INSTRUCTIONS and the PRIZES
This is where you'll find out how this kind of rally works, and of course (as always), there are rules, critical instructions and details of the prizes.
THE ROADBOOK & PRE-RACE CHECKLIST
The night before, have a quick look at the roadbook and the pre-race checklist.
It contains vital 'on-the-route', 'on-the-day' information about marker points, prize points, turning points and donation drop-off points.
The pre-race checklist is sort of obvious: you don't want to waste time on rally day!
NEWS, VIEWS & INTERVIEWS
A group of us were hiking in the mountains of the Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve, near Ceres. We were having a wonderful time until I slipped on loose gravel while descending the mountain and broke my left ankle. I knew that I could no longer walk and was in severe pain, thankfully one of my fellow hikers had a painkiller which helped until AMS arrived with the morphine!
Thankfully we still had cell phone signal, so one of our fellow hikers could contact the owner who contacted AMS.
The AMS helicopter flew out of Cape Town International Airport, and after submitting flight plans, managed to arive 2 hours after the fall.
The medics put me on a stretcher and carried me to the helicopter that had landed in a nearby clearing, before flying directly to Vincent Palotti in Cape Town.
I am so grateful for their assistance. They are my heroes!

Where did the idea come from?
About ten years ago I participated in the Phuket car rally, organised as a charity event, by GOMS. (Grumpy Old Mens Organisation) It was a fun morning driving around Phuket in the comfort and coolness of my car (it is hot in Phuket!).
So when my Rotary club was looking for a fundraising event, I thought we can do a Rally. With Covid in our lives it made perfect sense as you don’t need to leave the safety of your car! (Unless you want to)
At the same time Air Mercy Service contacted us about the need for a new tractor. So we decided to support the Hero’s of AMS, who fly in to help you when you are stranded and need medical attention.
We also decided to add in some fun elements with a purpose - hence the food donations that will go to Melkbos Rotary who support 2 assistance organisations who help the destitute families in Melkbos.
Rota-Rally is a fun drive for the whole family, a perfect time to leave your home and enjoy the countryside.
This is one of my favourite small towns, the people are very friendly, the streets are lined with trees and quaint old houses.
There are many restaurants to choose from and they have all been very supportive of the Rally. All have outdoor seating which is essential for Covid safety.
Obviously tourism is down in the area and this will help to promote the little gem that is Darling.
First of many?
Yes, we are certainly planning that this will be the first of many (we hope!). We aim to make it an all round 'feel good' day - something positive to look forward to.
