A Rotary Safari – Steven Lichty PhD

Steven is a co-founder and managing partner of REAL Consulting Group, a boutique consulting firm in Nairobi, Kenya.

He was a 2021-22 Rotary Peace Fellow at Chulalongkorn University and is currently working with Rotary International to conduct an impact evaluation of their Positive Peace Activator Program. Steven has 25 years’ experience in various sectors across 80+ countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He works with strategic foresight, organisational development, training, research, and evaluation. Additionally, he works with academic and research capacity building with universities in Kenya. 

Steven provided an overview of his work with Rotary – Evaluating Rotary’s Positive Peace Activator Training Program. Also importantly, the goal and objectives of his work in Kenya: 

Goal:

To promote peace by building and empowering marginalised voices among adolescents and youth in Kenya so that they can successfully engage and contribute numerous missing pieces to the sustainable peace puzzle, and in the long term, build flourishing communities.

Objectives:

  1. Explore how trauma influences a proactive engagement with their future
  2. Understand the relationship between trauma healing and increased futures consciousness
  3. Empower them to impart their insight organically with peers, parents, and future generation.

Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus and IEP’s 8 Pillars of Positive Peace

The Positive Peace Framework is made up of 8 pillars of Positive Peace: Well-functioning Government, Sound Business Environment, Equitable Distribution of Resources, Acceptance of the Rights of Others, Good Relations with Neighbours, Free Flow of Information, High Levels of Human Capital, and Low Levels of Corruption.

CURRENT PROJECT WITH ROTARY

Steven concluded that his current project with Rotary was Evaluating Rotary’s Positive Peace Activator Training Program. Over 190 participants from America, Africa, Asia, and Europe have been trained in the Institute for Economics and Peace Positive Peace Framework. Steven returned two months ago from a three-day training in Lagos, Nigeria.where they engaged with 44 participants from nine countries in West and Central Africa. Steven will continue to engage with Activators from across the globe to assess the impact of their work.
