TRIBUTE TO PAST RI PRESIDENT – JONATHAN MAJIYAGBE

In this issue we pay tribute to Jonathan B. Majiyagbe, a past Rotary International President who died  on 27 May at a hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, who served as Rotary International President in 2003-04. He was the first and so far the only RI President from Africa. The continent was declared free of wild polio in August 2020, due in part to his tireless advocacy and efforts.

To represent this idea in the presidential theme logo above, PRI President Jonathan clearly wanted the two hands featured in the design to be on the same level, so that the person receiving is equal in standing with the person giving the aid.

“He was an epitome of integrity and imbued with extraordinary intellect,” said long-time friend Tunji Funsho, a past chair of the Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. “I will miss the warmth of his presence and drinking from his deep well of wisdom.”

PRID Jonathan exhibited great strength after his first wife, Ade, died suddenly in June 2003 just as he was about to begin his presidency. He persevered and gave life to the term, the ‘family of Rotary’  keen for Rotarians to provide friendship and support to the families of Rotarians who had suffered a loss or illness.

Closer to home, DG June Webber requested that PRIP Jonathan represent the RI President at the D9350 Centennial Conference 2005 (80th) held at the Baxter Theatre from 12 – 18 May, organised by the RC of Kirstenbosch. His presence had a powerful impact on all who attended.

May this much loved and highly respected Rotarian Rest in Peace. Sincere condolences to his wife Ayo and  to all  the members of Jonathan’s family, from the Rotary Club of Waterfront.

Above pic: David Bradley captured this priceless moment at the RI Convention in Chicago that commenced on 18 June 2005, when PDG June spotted PRIP Jonathan in between sessions. It is estimated that 50 000 Rotarians attended the Centennial Convention that year.
