From Books to Opportunity: Bringing a School Library Back to Life

Sue Truter and Mymoena Ismail visited Garlandale Primary School, where something exciting is taking shape: the school is preparing to relaunch its library.

Our visit was also about delivering books gifted by the Rotary Club of Waterfront as part of our 34th Anniversary celebrations. But this was never simply about handing over books. It was about putting resources into the hands of learners and creating a space that develops literacy, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and digital confidence – essential capabilities in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

Adding another dimension to the visit was Deaulian Storm, an NCV student from SIYP, who volunteered his time to help set up and organise the library. As he sorted, labelled and took stock of the books, he reflected that the experience reminded him of preparing his own bookshop before opening its doors to customers. This time, however, the “customers” will be learners.  Deaulian also appreciated the opportunity to spend time at the school and work alongside his school mentor, Teacher October.

As we left, we bumped into Deidre October, a former library assistant from Athlone North Primary School who is now a qualified Foundation Phase teacher at Garlandale.  We are very proud of her achievement.

The library is coming together—and Garlandale is preparing to open its doors in early October. Well done!
