Kris Miller Shares the Otto Foundation’s Vision for Literacy and Social Change

The Rotary Club of Waterfront recently welcomed Kris Miller, Manager of Partnerships and Special Projects at the Otto Foundation, as its guest speaker. Her presentation highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to improving early literacy in South Africa and the transformative impact of creating accessible, engaging reading spaces for children.
Kris brings extensive experience in the social impact sector. In addition to her work with the Otto Foundation, she consults to Gold Fields in a global standards and assurance role, runs her own consulting practice, and founded the Great Girls Trust, a youth philanthropy organisation dedicated to empowering young women.
The Otto Foundation’s Mission to Improve Early Literacy in South Africa
Established in 2016 by entrepreneur Chris Otto and his daughter Zephne Ladbrook, the Otto Foundation serves as the philanthropic trust of the Otto family. The Foundation was created to contribute to social justice and positive change in South Africa through initiatives that improve literacy outcomes for children.
Chris Otto is widely known as a founding director of PSG Group, Capitec Bank, and Zeder Investments. Through the Foundation, the Otto family continues to invest in educational opportunities that help young South Africans build a stronger future.
Why Reading for Enjoyment Matters
Research consistently shows that reading for enjoyment is one of the strongest predictors of educational success. Studies have found that a child’s enjoyment of reading can have a greater influence on academic achievement than socio-economic background.
This finding is particularly important in South Africa, where educational outcomes often mirror household income levels and where significant inequalities continue to affect access to quality learning resources.
Addressing South Africa’s Reading Crisis
South Africa faces a significant literacy challenge. Approximately 80% of primary school learners are unable to read for meaning in any language by Grade 3 or Grade 4. This literacy gap affects educational performance, future employment opportunities, and long-term social mobility.
The Otto Foundation addresses this challenge by supporting programmes that encourage reading habits, improve access to books, and create inspiring learning environments for children.
Rotary Club Waterfront and Otto Foundation Partnership
The Rotary Club of Waterfront has proudly partnered with the Otto Foundation on five inner-city school library projects. These initiatives aim to provide learners with safe, attractive, and welcoming spaces where they can discover the joy of reading.
The partnership is currently supporting the Prestwich Primary School Sunset Clouds Library Project, which seeks to transform the school library into a vibrant educational hub. By creating inviting spaces filled with books and learning opportunities, the project encourages learners to develop a lifelong love of reading.
Creating Lasting Impact Through Literacy
The development of school libraries does more than provide access to books. It creates environments where imagination, learning, and personal growth can flourish. When children are given opportunities to read for enjoyment, they gain critical literacy skills that support success throughout their educational journey.
The presentation concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Andre du Toit, who shared his own passion for reading and commended Kris Miller and the Otto Foundation for their life-changing work in communities across South Africa.
As the Rotary Club of Waterfront and the Otto Foundation continue their collaboration, their shared commitment to literacy development is helping create brighter futures for South African learners—one library at a time.
