Guest Speaker Leendert Wijnja: From Heart Transplant to World Competition

We had the pleasure of welcoming back speaker Leendert Wijnja who had previously shared with us his long history of heart disease and an eventual heart transplant after an 18 month waiting period before receiving a heart.❤

Leendert qualified to participate in the 100m and 50m breaststroke events in the 25th World Transplant Games staged in Dresden, Germany in 2025.

Inspiring Journey: South African Athlete’s Remarkable Recovery and Achievement

We were thrilled that he was able to share his inspiring story from the recent World Transplant Games, where athletes with organ transplants showcased their resilience, determination, and talent. Leendert was one of the standout participants from South African who competing in swimming events after receiving a heart transplant. His journey is nothing short of remarkable. Born with a congenital heart condition, he underwent multiple surgeries before receiving a life-saving transplant at 32. Now, at 36, he’s not only thriving but breaking records!

Silver Medal and South African Record in 100m Breaststroke

At the Games, Leendert competed in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events, earning a silver medal in the 100m and setting a new South African record. His dedication to training, his gratitude for his donor, and his passion for promoting organ donation are truly inspiring.

25th World Transplant Games: 2,500 Athletes from 60 Countries Celebrate Life

The World Transplant Games, often called the “Olympics for transplant recipients,” bring together athletes from over 60 countries to celebrate life and raise awareness about organ donation. This year’s event in Dresden, Germany, saw 2,500 athletes aged 8 to 80 competing in a variety of sports. South Africa’s team of 64 athletes placed 8th overall—a testament to their skill and spirit.

Celebrating Organ Donation and Donor Families

Beyond the competition, the Games foster a sense of community and gratitude. A highlight was the Parade of Nations, where donor families received a standing ovation for their incredible generosity.

Supporting Organ Donation Awareness and Future Competitions

This athlete’s story reminds us of the transformative power of organ donation and the importance of living life to the fullest. As he prepares for future competitions, including the National Transplant Games later this year, we wish him continued success and good health. 👏👏👏 Let’s celebrate these incredible achievements and continue to support organ donation awareness.
