An Inclusive and Shared Responsibility – Reflections by AG Mymoena Ismail
“Peace is the soil, climate resilience is the rain, and food security is the fruit that grows when both are cared for.”
These words framed our dialogue at the 7th Social Justice Summit, hosted by the Stellenbosch University Centre for Social Justice, under the theme: “Social Justice, Food Security and Peace: Pathways to Equality, Solidarity, Sustainability and Climate Resilience.”
As anchor panellist and moderator for the session Peace and Climate Resilience as Drivers for Food Security, I witnessed the power of authentic dialogue. Community members, youth, academics, and policymakers came together — not just to talk, but to listen, connect, and co-create solutions.
We explored one truth: peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of fairness, opportunity, and compassion. From that foundation, we explored how justice, inclusion, and dignity must be part of every plate of food and every policy decision.
Together with Dr Fanie du Toit, Ms Lolwethu Luthuli, and Mr Chumile Samson, we unpacked the deep connections between governance, resilience, and empowerment. The audience reminded us that when youth and women lead — peace and sustainability follow. (See pic above)
Our discussions also highlighted practical pathways, from climate-smart policies to community food gardens, showing that resilience and hope grow from the soil up.
We were challenged to think differently about participation in the digital age:
What if we didn’t just show up alone, but connected our communities, schools, and townships digitally through shared spaces?
This is how we bridge the digital divide — creating access where we are, with what we have, building trust, inclusivity, and innovation that strengthen both economic and social success.
Rotary’s role in advancing the Social Justice M-Plan also emerged as a key reflection — linking policy, partnerships, and people to accelerate equality and reduce poverty by 2030. Collaboration is Rotary’s greatest strength, bridging research and community, dialogue and delivery, vision and action.
As we reflect on this summit, let’s carry forward one commitment:
To build peace through inclusion, act where we stand, and ensure justice reaches every community it was meant to serve. Let’s act now.

sharing a light moment!
