The Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) Annual General Meeting took place on Friday, 27 June, with a strong focus on programme relevance, quality delivery, and long-term sustainability. Representing the Rotary Club of Waterfront, David Bradley and Captain Mymoena Ismail had the honour of attending the AGM, reaffirming our club’s ongoing support for youth empowerment and vocational education.
A key message that stood out during the session came from SIYP Board Member Ivan Neethling, who reminded attendees that “relevance, delivery, and quality” are essential for the institute’s longevity. With a rapidly evolving youth demographic and the shifting demands of today’s job market, Ivan emphasised the need for SIYP to continue innovating and adapting its programmes to stay impactful and aligned with real-world needs.
He drew special attention to the Solar Photovoltaic Mounting Programme, a timely and strategic initiative responding to South Africa’s growing green economy and the urgent demand for alternative energy solutions. This SETA-accredited course, introduced under the NEETs Youth Employability Programme, not only reflects the Salesian global Green Alliance movement but also equips young people—many previously not in employment, education, or training—with skills that open up tangible career paths in the renewable energy sector.
The AGM also marked a celebration of milestones highlighted in the 2024 Annual Report. With learners enrolled in the NEETs programme and strong uptake in vocational workshops such as hospitality, hairdressing, woodwork, electrical, and the recently introduced auto-mechanical stream, SIYP continues to deliver real impact at scale. The report showcased high attendance rates and successful work-integrated learning placements, further proving the effectiveness of targeted, industry-aligned skills development in combating youth unemployment.
As a long-standing partner, the Rotary Club of Waterfront salutes SIYP’s unwavering commitment to education, empowerment, and employability. Together, we remain dedicated to walking alongside young people as they journey toward personal growth, meaningful opportunity, and social inclusion.
