Michelle Whitehead – “A Cameo of my life”

Michelle is a former member of the RC of Waterfront. At the time of her resignation she headed up the membership portfolio. Michelle was born with a Rotary spoon in her mouth, her father Tony Whitehead, being a Past District Governor, a member of the RC of Wynberg.

Michelle is networked throughout both the Hospitality and Sporting industries. She has played Tennis since three years old – became one of the youngest coaches in SA, starting a wonderful development programme as her “give-back” to her sport.

Michelle emphasized her work with the Growing Sports Foundation, noting how small acts of kindness can significantly benefit disadvantaged schools. Additionally, she mentioned her experiences as a preschool teacher and tennis coach, illustrating her commitment to education and community engagement.

Her passion for creating “new” brought about the Hospitality industry for her when she created Mountain Manor Guest House in 1996.This has expanded over the years with buying and renovating new properties and creating Harrow House self-catering and Mountain Manor Flash Packers lodge, which she subsequently sold.

Michelle also discussed her experiences in the hospitality industry, focusing on personal growth through diverse interactions and the significance of mentoring young women. She highlighted challenges faced in poorly maintained schools and the positive outcomes of community initiatives.

The meeting concluded with introductions from visitors, including Christian from Munich and Rebekka Sandmeier from UCT, who expressed admiration for Michelle’s story.

In conclusion Michelle said that returning to the RC of Waterfront was like “coming home”. Her return will certainly impact RCW positively.

Above: Thursday, 8 May – “Getting to Know Rotary” at Mountain Manor Guest House. Michelle organised this orientation “fireside chat” which was hugely successful, also attended by a number of crew. It was informal and interactive, with wonderful fellowship.
