PIP Project: Empowering Elderly Women Through Knitting and Conservation

Above: Speaker Janine Greyling (holding Roger – the Riverine Rabbit) – the visionary behind the PIP brand with Janet Kriseman (holding Pip the Pangolin – the most endangered species). Janet was the Bosun at the morning meeting, ensuring that all ran smoothly, adhering to strict time keeping so that Janine had adequate opportunity for her presentation, which was impressive.
Janine shared that “Life’s journey comes full circle, and at PIP, we honour this cycle by supporting the elderly in their golden years. Founded in memory of my grandmother, who sought purpose and joy each day, PIP empowers elderly individuals with skills and opportunities to pursue what they love.”

Why focus on the Elderly? Pensioner grants: R2180 per month for recipients between 60 and 74 years; R2 255 per month, for recipients over 75 years
It is a project with a heart! PIP creates the opportunity for elderly ladies to knit and crochet, giving them purpose and enjoyment which in turn generates financial income. • Our handmade knitted and crocheted items are crafted by elderly women in Riebeek West, Gordon’s Bay, Riebeek Kasteel, Bethlehem and Moorreesburg. • We provide financial support to those often reliant on pensions or community aid. • A range of hand crafted items are made with the focus on crochet toys in particular a range of South African endangered species mascots. • Funds gets donated to various conservation bodies on the sale of each endangered animal (see slide below).

This impressive project, with social benefits making a positive impact on the community, environment and particularly, the aligned elderly often forgotten, is lauded with appreciation.
