Janey Ball provided an in depth update this week on the status of Polio eradication world-wide, as well as the Change in World Eradication Timeline from RI’s Polio office, which is shared below –
“The Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) Polio Oversight Board (POB), on which Rotary is represented by International PolioPlus Committee chair Mike McGovern, met 17 July to discuss a variety of topics including the current epidemiology of poliovirus and the two goals of the GPEI’s 2022-2026 strategic plan. After much consideration, the POB concluded that more time will be needed to reach the goals of interrupting transmission of both wild poliovirus and variant poliovirus type 2. As such, the timeline to certify the world wild poliovirus free has been extended to 2027, and the timeline to certify the world variant poliovirus type 2 free has been extended to 2029.
While this news may be disappointing, it is important to remember that tremendous progress has been made in polio eradication since Rotary launched the PolioPlus program in 1985. Rotary’s role in the global effort to eradicate polio is critical. The historic opportunity to eradicate only the second human disease in history after smallpox remains within reach. The best way for Rotarians to continue our leadership role in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is to meet our fundraising goal of US$50 million annually, raise awareness about Rotary’s role in the effort and invite others to join in the global effort. Together, we end polio.”
