Salesians NEETS Learners Earn Certificates at Wings for Life Run, Gain Digital Workforce Skills

Celebrating Achievement: NEETS Learners Honored as Event Marshals

On Thursday, 24 July, more than 40 learners from the Salesians NEETS programme were awarded certificates of participation for their role as volunteer marshals in the Wings for Life World Run. The certificate ceremony was a proud moment, attended by Programme Manager Gabriel Hamuy, the lecturers, and the Job Placement Officer — all of whom played a vital role in supporting the learners. Pieter Swart and Mymoena Ismail facilitated a dynamic Ready for Work session, focused on preparing young people for success in today’s digital-first world of work.

Building Character 4.0: Essential Skills for the Digital Workforce

Pieter, drawing from his experience as an entrepreneur, highlighted the essential Character 4.0 skills and workplace competencies needed to thrive: teamwork and collaboration, resilience in the face of failure, perseverance, continuous learning, and the importance of doing things smarter, not harder. He stressed the value of self-motivation, personal purpose, and standing out through differentiation — all underpinned by trust, grit, and the ability to build strong networks. These are not just soft skills — they are survival skills in a rapidly evolving job market.

Crafting a Professional Digital Identity

Mymoena introduced learners to the importance of building a professional digital identity, explaining how platforms like uLektz, offered by Salesians, can help them build a strong online professional presence, align their achievements with career goals, and access relevant work and learning opportunities. She also introduced the concept of digital citizenship, encouraging learners to be mindful, ethical, and authentic in how they show up online.

“It’s not about getting a job. It’s about building a career — and more importantly, building yourself,” said Mymoena Ismail, encouraging learners to take ownership of their growth and meet the demands of an evolving workplace with confidence.

Looking Ahead: More Opportunities Await

The session concluded with a heartfelt thank you to the learners for their commitment, and a reminder that more volunteering and leadership opportunities lie ahead. With new confidence and tools in hand, they are now better equipped to meet the future head-on!
