Hannarie’s Motto: “Remember, you’ll never be as young again as you are today!”
Hannarie is a former member of the RC of Waterfront, now an Honorary Member, who has provided the RCW sustained support in both roles over two decades. We salute her for this unwavering commitment as she faces some wellness challenges.
Hannarie grew up in Stellenbosch and Paarl and studied at the University of Pretoria. She worked for the old Government Department of Information and served two terms abroad in editorial positions. (One of her key roles was production of South African Panorama; the monthly glossy magazine that was distributed widely. Content concentrated on Our country’s people, places and industrial and artistic achievements.)
In 1981 she returned to the Cape where she worked for Unifruco, responsible for all publications, among them the monthly deciduous fruit industry magazine. Hannarie joined the then new Camps Bay Rotary Club and remained a Member until the Club was disbanded in September 1999 when she joined RC Waterfront.
Hannarie became closely involved in Management of Christine Revell Children’s Home in Athlone. and with her strong literary interest she took an active role in assisting with the pioneering Children’s Library initiative when Waterfront Club began work in Namaqualand in 2005. Hannarie journeyed to the Northern Cape and assisted the fledging libraries in three Namaqualand Schools.
Hannarie donated cash for the purchase of books that assisted us to open three libraries with carefully selected book-stocks – initially all in Afrikaans (lingua franca of the local communities).
With her excellent language skills in French and German, Hannarie was sought after to chat to visitors from Europe and to translate correspondence. Hannarie served the Club with terms as Vocation Director and Club Secretary and was always ready to assist at projects while carrying on working as a free-lance writer/editor from home.
