On Friday, 25 October, we proudly hosted our inaugural “Dress for Success” workshop, a vital initiative within the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) Employability Plans. This program is designed to bridge the gap in preparing learners for the realities of the workforce. With approximately 115 eager participants, the workshop highlighted the critical importance of professional presentation as a stepping stone to successful employment.
SIYP recognise that equipping learners with the skills to present themselves effectively is essential for individual success and breaking the cycle of poverty. Many young people face significant barriers when entering the job market, and our program aims to address these challenges head-on.
By preparing learners for the professional world, we also help reduce the burden on employers, who often incur additional costs to retrain new hires. Our goal was to equip learners with the necessary tools and knowledge, enabling them to transition smoothly into their next phase and contribute meaningfully from day one.
It was truly inspiring to witness the lively engagement of our learners and their earnest commitment to shaping their futures. Our dedicated Rotary Club of Waterfront team—comprised of business owners Nadene Rolston, Debby Daniel, Dave and Denise Reid Daly, and Rotaractor Karen Ndlovo – who all brought valuable insights into what employers are looking for when hiring staff. Their real-world experience enriched the workshop, providing learners with practical guidance on navigating the job market.
Key takeaways for the learners included:
• Do your research on the company you are keen to work for.
• Prepare well and manage your time effectively.
• Be confident in showcasing your talents.
Together, we are creating pathways to employment and fostering a generation ready to break free from poverty.
