In a world where literacy is the foundation for social and economic progress, the Rotary Club of Waterfront, in collaboration with the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) is boldly empowering vulnerable youth through transformative literacy interventions.
At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to equipping learners with the essential skills needed to break the cycle of poverty. By introducing cutting-edge digital tools like Reading Eggs, learners at SIYP’s Learn to Live School of Skills are experiencing unprecedented progress in their reading abilities.
Many of these learners arrive with severe literacy challenges, often reading at a Grade 1 level, despite being in higher grades. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of educators like Ms. Happiness Mofokeng, these learners are now experiencing significant improvements, with some logging in from home to continue their learning journey.
The impact of this program is reflected in the personal stories of learners like Hluma, Liyabona, and JP, who, through the combination of guided reading sessions and digital literacy tools, are now reading multiple books and earning certificates of achievement. These milestones build their reading skills and
self-confidence, fostering a sense of accomplishment that extends beyond the classroom.
As the program evolves, so too does the vision for a brighter future. The next phase of this initiative involves the development of a Smart Reading Library, where learners will have access to more digital resources and a collaborative learning environment. By integrating technology with literacy education, we are addressing the immediate literacy needs and preparing these young minds for the future of work, where digital literacy is paramount.
For the Rotary Club of Waterfront and SIYP, this initiative is more than just a program; it’s a lifeline for young people who would otherwise struggle to find their place in society. As Rotary International celebrates Basic Education and Literacy Month, we invite more partners to join us in this mission. Together, we can build stronger, more resilient communities through the power of education.
