On Monday evening the Senior Finals in this year’s Rotary Interschools’ debating Competition were held at Rondebosch Boys’ High School between DF Malan High anb Reddam Constantia.
The topic was “The Increasing Trend of the Modern Left characterising Conservative Politicians and Voters, is morally reprehensible”. After a coin toss to decide Proposer and Opposer, Reddam proposed and DF Malan opposed.
Reddam was represented by Grade 10 learners Lauren Cranswick, Daniel Wood and matriculant Lucia Canelli, while the DF debaters were matriculants Jayden Heyman, Jana Burger and Bea Fourie.
Reddam were crowned winners with Lauren awarded best speaker. Captain Mymoena congratulated the teams and mentioned that this competition is part of Rotary’s vision for youth leadership and development. The winners’ trophy and cash prize will be presented to Reddam at an Assembly where the entire school can applaud them.
The adjudicating panel consisted of Nick Ford, a former provincial debater, Piet Olivier, a former national debater now practicing as an advocate at the Cape Bar, Dylan Scott, an educator and debating coach and Vee Nhonge, a member of the UCT Debating Union currently studying BioChemistry.
