Launch of the New Blue Train at The Blue Train Park – Tuesday, 10 December

Today we learnt the history of this incredible project that the RC of Sea Point have facilitated and managed over decades, after taking the project over from Lions. The Park was established in 1958. The many stalwarts who had worked hard over the decades, although no longer visibly present, watched with pride. Every one was acknowledged for their contribution with gratitude. The RC of Sea Point won the Best District Community Service Project award for this remarkable project in 2010 .

The Mayoral Committee Head for Economic Growth in the City of Cape Town, James Vos, applauded the launch of the Blue Train in Cape Town, a result of a collaborative public-private partnership spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Sea Point. This initiative showcases the city’s commitment to providing world-class experiences for both local and international visitors, underscoring the collective efforts of its organisations and residents to highlight the very best Cape Town has to offer.

AG Chris spoke on behalf of DG Stephen Young who unfortunately could not attend the event. “For many years the Blue Train chuffed around its 400m of track, bringing fun and happiness to everyone who rode in her. Being so close to the sea sadly brought an end to the attraction because of the corrosion it caused to both the train and its tracks. But through the efforts of the RC of Sea Point and the dedicated Rebuild Team led by Andries Keyser, we are celebrating the re-commissioning of the train today. On behalf of Rotary D9350 it is my privilege to be here today to witness the return of a Cape Town Icon. Many overseas visitors will again, be able to take a fond memory home with them.

Congratulations President Arifa and your club on the hard work in bringing the Blue Train back to life!”

A celebration! Andries Keyser and wife – centre and his mother behind June, with Rotarians from many clubs. The train ride took us all back decades, memories shared with kids and grandchildren as together we rode the Blue Train,. (Captain Mymoena, her son Uzair and June represented RC Waterfront.)
