Guest Speaker Alex Schubert: Mindfulness Futurist and Foresight Strategist

Alex is a Mindfulness Futurist, Foresight Strategist, SIY Certified Corporate Mindfulness Facilatator/Trainer/Coach and IT PM/PgM, and Rotarian Entrepreneurship Mentor. Formerly a charter member of the Noon Gun Club, Alex has been a member of Rotary for decades.

Introduction to Mindful Futures: From VUCA to BANI Framework

Alex shared his journey from IT Project Management to Futures Research, highlighting the importance of understanding the past and present in relation to the future. He explained the VUCA model and its evolution into the BANI framework (brittle, anxious, non-linear, and incomprehensible) that reflects the complexities of today’s world. Alex also incorporated mindfulness practices to help attendees refocus and settle their thoughts.

Stellenbosch Business School: Africa’s Only Futures Studies Programme

Alex Schubert provided insights into his experience at Stellenbosch Business School, emphasising its distinction as the only institution in Africa offering Futures Studies programmes. He referenced discussions with Prof. Andre Roux regarding his research thesis and mentioned Mrone Mostard’s long-standing association with the school. Alex also acknowledged the influence of Professor Philip Spies in the field of philosophy within the context of Futures Studies.

Foundations and Evolution of Futures Studies: Strategic Foresight Explained

Alex explored the history of Futures Studies, mentioning influential thinkers like Karl Popper, who argued for a scientific approach to the field, and Jules Verne, recognised as the first futurist. He explained the concept of Strategic Foresight, which involves analysing past and present data to inform future decisions, and contrasted it with mere prediction. He also highlighted the role of the Dubai Future Foundation in promoting Innovation and Future Readiness.

The presentation was of much interest – aligned to the Clem Sunter strategy of “Taking the High Road or the Low Road”.
