The Rotaract District 9350 Conference Gala Dinner held on Saturday night July 6 at a conference center in Onrus was a very entertaining evening. The delegates wore formal finery, and the beautifully laid tables looked like a scene from The Adams Family: red tablecloths and serviettes, crystal type wine glasses, and gold rimmed platters. Vibrant music kept the atmosphere electric. David Holtzhausen efficiently screened videos made by a variety of Rotaract clubs showcasing their club’s best projects of the year. These ranged from community soccer days to children’s Xmas parties to running motivation sessions for high school learners. Numerous awards were given out, to enthusiastic cheers and applause, including 4 to Waterfront Rotaractors for service and selflessness (see pic below).
The delegates sitting near us had come all the way from Angola and Namibia, 4 days of driving each way, but they all seemed delighted to be there. Most were young professionals, such as engineers and accountants. The outgoing and incoming District Rotaract Representatives made short speeches, and the 2024/25 Board were also called up. The evening included a very festive “best dressed ‘ competition, with the participants shimmying down a red carpet, again to much goodhumoured cheering and applause.
It was very heart warming to see the enthusiasm and commitment of these young people, not only to help others less fortunate than themselves, but their faith and pride in being part of Rotary.
