Solar Mounter Success Story: Empowering the Workforce of Tomorrow

At Salesian Institute Youth Projects, we are committed to equipping young people with the skills and competencies needed to thrive in high-growth economic sectors. Our latest success story comes from the Solar Photovoltaic (SPVT) Mounter training programme, where three of our learners have made a remarkable impact in their first workplace placement.

We were invited to nominate three learners for workplace experiential training at a Lesedi-initiated contract site at Fruitpak Packaging Company in Ashton. In line with the company’s commitment to gender equity, we selected two female learners, Kelli-Kim Akim and Chenecka Fondling, alongside one male learner, Rico-Che Marinus. These individuals had successfully completed an intensive eight-month training programme, which included work readiness skills, first aid certification, working-at-heights training, and simulated practical sessions on our in-house training roofs.

After just three days on site, the Site Manager, Claudie Williams, reached out to express her admiration for their outstanding work ethic, technical proficiency, and adherence to safety protocols. She highlighted that, despite being part of a larger team responsible for mounting 1,080 solar panels on the Fruitpak warehouse rooftop, our learners stood out for their performance and professionalism. Notably, the presence of our two female learners has positively influenced team dynamics, demonstrating that the renewable energy sector is open to all.

In recognition of their exceptional contributions, Lesedi has expressed interest in offering full-time contracts to the three learners as part of their expanding solar mounter and installer team. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of our training approach and reaffirms the role of Salesian Institute Youth Projects in bridging the skills gap and creating sustainable employment pathways.

As we continue to drive skills development in high-impact industries, we invite more employers to partner with us in providing work-integrated learning and employment opportunities. Together, we can empower youth, support economic growth, and alleviate poverty through practical skills training and competency development.
