Music & Medicine: Dr. Philipp Mathmann’s Work in Cape Town Communities

Guest Speaker – Philipp Mathmann: Honorary Associate Professor, Senior Physician, Opera Singer, and philanthropist, Dr. Philipp Mathmann, was warmly welcomed as our guest speaker by the RC Waterfront crew. A senior physician at Münster University Hospital and an internationally acclaimed opera singer, Philipp uses his diverse talents to serve the community.

After two years of trying, Philipp finally secured a speaker opportunity with us, coinciding with his return to Cape Town, where he trained at Groote Schuur Hospital. He shared the story of the iThemba Labantu project in Philippi, which began as an HIV care initiative and expanded to include education and vocational training, as well as a soup kitchen. Philipp also started a music program at iThemba Labantu in 2012, which now serves 60 children and has helped connect them to the University of Cape Town.

As Philipp prepares for retirement, he will pass the leadership of the music program to Sophia Sittel. He highlighted the importance of vocal health exams, which are scarce in South Africa, and the positive impact his collaboration with Annette Goehres has had on both students and faculty.

Philipp also shared updates on the music outreach project and ongoing fundraising efforts, with potential support from Rotary Clubs. Tony Austen praised Philipp’s dedication and bravery, emphasizing the profound impact of his service to others.

It was an inspiring session, and we are grateful to Philipp for sharing his remarkable journey with us.
