Rotary Club of Waterfront – AGM Summary: Reflecting on 2024/25 and Charting a Course for 2026

The Rotary Club of Waterfront held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, 5 December 2025, welcoming 27 members and AG Chris Beech, Joan Cornish of Soroptimist International Cape of Good Hope (SICGH), Honorary members Lyndon Marescia and Lionel Daniel, also Associate member Rebekka Sandmaier  The meeting marked a moment of reflection on the past year, celebration of achievements, and planning for the year ahead.

In a heartfelt address, Captain Tony announced his decision to step down after six months of dedicated leadership. Derek Pead will take over as Club Captain, steering RS Waterfront from 1 January to 30 June 2026. While all Board members expressed their willingness to continue, several longstanding members indicated the need to step aside. Successors will be identified and mentored to ensure a smooth transition. 

Spiro Mitchell thanked Tony for his leadership and commitment, noting that he would remain an active member of the club.

The AGM covered and approved key agenda items:

  • Annual Report 2024/25 – The club’s comprehensive report on activities, projects, and achievements over the past year was formally approved.
  • Financial Statement 2024/25 – Treasurer Debby Daniel guided members through the audited financials, which were approved unanimously, reflecting the club’s transparency and accountability.
  • Amended By-laws – Updates to the club’s By-laws were approved, including:
    • Article 3 – Membership: Introduction of Spouse Members
    • Article 10 – Committees: Environment and Peacebuilding
    • Code of Good Practice: Updates to Article 15 (Communications) and Article 16 (Dispute Resolution).

Election of Office Bearers for 2026/2027 – With no nominations from the floor, the proposed Board was unanimously approved:

  • Spiro Mitchell – Master Bosun & Fundraising
  • Piet Postema – Community Services
  • Mymoena Ismail – Rotary Foundation & International Partnerships
  • Michelle Whitehead – Membership
  • June Webber – Public Image
  • Maryka Vermaak – Club Administration
  • Jan Buurman – Entrepreneurship
  • Jaco Janse van Vuuren – Environment.

The 2025 AGM underscored the Rotary Club of Waterfront’s commitment to good governance, strong leadership, and meaningfulcommunity engagement. With a clear roadmap and a dedicated Board in place, the club is well-positioned to continue making a positive difference in the year ahead.
