Salesians Stitch Ahead Project Graduation

Message from Frieda Pehlivan – Salesians Communication Manager

“Salesians Institute Youth Projects was thrilled to celebrate the successful graduation of the last Stitch Ahead Sewing cohort for 2023, which took place on Wednesday, the 13th of December. This momentous occasion marked the culmination of three months of hard work and dedication by a group of 15 aspiring ladies.

We are delighted to share the successful graduation of 14 participants, who have acquired valuable skills in basic sewing techniques and garment construction. The journey of growth and learning undertaken by each individual has been truly inspiring, and we are immensely proud of their accomplishments.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed funders and supporters, the Rotary Club of Waterfront, the Inner Wheel Club of Waterfront, the Mauerberger Foundation, the New Zealand High Commission, and fabric donations from The Forever Young Club in Cape Town. Their unwavering support, both in terms of funding and encouragement, played a pivotal role in making this cohort possible. Their commitment to empowering individuals through education and skills development has positively impacted the lives of these aspiring sewists.

As we reflect on the achievements of this cohort, we look forward to the continued success and impact of Stitch Ahead Sewing programs in the future making a difference in our community.”

Message from David Bradley

“All course participants, who although literate, were all jobless, some with family responsibilities.  They received their diplomas as well as a sling bag containing sewing supplies to go with a folding table and a sewing machine to enable the graduate to immediately begin a micro-businessWe viewed their completed work as well as the exciting opportunity for each to showcase a garment they had made.  Most had made cocktail or special event dresses and they strutted down the carpet with great pride to receive their diplomas from IYP CEO Fr Francois Dufour.”

Graduates in the stunning outfits they designed and made.
