RYLA Empowers Future Leaders: Learners Share Life-Changing Leadership Journey

Rotary Club Waterfront Celebrates the Transformative Impact of Youth Leadership Development

The Rotary Club of Waterfront’s recent breakfast meeting was filled with inspiration as learners from Learn to Live School of Skills and Trafalgar High School returned to share their experiences from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp.

As part of Rotary Club Waterfront’s ongoing commitment to youth development, the club invests significantly in leadership programmes that equip young people with the skills, confidence, and networks needed to become future leaders. Through initiatives such as RYLA and Adventure into Citizenship, multiple learners are given life-changing opportunities each year to grow both personally and professionally.

The impact of this year’s RYLA camp was evident as participants reflected on the profound difference the experience had made in their lives.

Building Confidence, Leadership and Self-Worth

The learners shared several key takeaways from their time at RYLA, highlighting the programme’s ability to unlock potential and inspire personal growth.

A Shared Sense of Worth

By meeting and learning alongside peers from diverse backgrounds across the Western Cape, participants developed a stronger sense of self-worth and belonging. The experience helped them realise their value and potential as young leaders.

Personal Growth in a Safe Environment

Many learners noted that being treated with genuine respect, kindness, and encouragement allowed them to step outside their comfort zones. The supportive environment created a safe space where they could challenge themselves, develop new skills, and build confidence.

Expanding Horizons

The camp broadened their perspectives and provided opportunities to form meaningful friendships with young people from different communities. These new relationships created lasting support networks that extend well beyond the duration of the programme.

Sustainable Leadership in Action

One of the most powerful examples of RYLA’s long-term impact is JP Sterris, a former participant who now returns to every RYLA camp as a leader and facilitator.

His journey from learner to mentor embodies Rotary’s commitment to sustainable youth development and demonstrates how investing in young people today creates leaders who will inspire future generations tomorrow.

Strong School Partnerships Drive Success

The event was further strengthened by the attendance of leaders from both participating schools, reflecting the importance of collaboration in youth development.

Both Mr. Masimila and Ms. Cabrita (below) praised the Rotary Club of Waterfront for the significant and tangible impact its youth programmes continue to have on learners. They expressed appreciation for the strong and enduring partnerships that have been built between their schools and the club.

Investing in Education Beyond Leadership Programmes

Rotary Club Waterfront and the Rotaract Club of Waterfront continue to support learners through a range of educational initiatives aimed at reducing barriers to success.

These include:

  • Study Buddy Boxes that provide matric learners with essential support during examination periods.
  • Stationery packs distributed to vulnerable learners.
  • Educational outreach programmes benefiting schools in communities such as Langa, Salt River, and Factreton.

During the meeting, learners were presented with stationery packs to support their ongoing educational journey, further demonstrating Rotary’s commitment to empowering young people through practical assistance.

Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

The learners’ presentations served as a powerful reminder that leadership development extends far beyond the classroom. Through mentorship, personal growth opportunities, and meaningful community partnerships, Rotary is helping young people discover their potential and build brighter futures.

As these young leaders return to their schools and communities with newfound confidence, skills, and purpose, they become living examples of Rotary’s belief that investing in youth is one of the most effective ways to create lasting positive change.
